How Preanesthetic Blood Screening Can Save Your Pets Life

Our hospital is excited to announce our new in-house comprehensive blood screening package for cats and dogs.

Just like for humans, often illness and disease cannot be picked up by just looking over our patients, and sadly our pets cant talk to us and tell us what they are feeling. This is where blood screening comes into play.

Our new blood screening package includes all the essentials to get a comprehensive look into your pets health, and we can complete this on the spot in our hospital with one simple blood draw!

Canine Blood Screening Package:

– A Full CBC (Complete Blood Count): which lets us look at your pets haematology (blood) for conditions like anaemia and markers of inflammation, that can be early indicators of underlying medical conditions or even cancers, as well as alert us to parasite burdens

– A Chem 10: which looks closely at the health of internal organs such as the liver and kidneys that play a vital role in your pets health, ensuring they are functioning adequately, as well as their glucose and their protein levels which will allow us to know how well your pet will heal which is useful when considering surgical procedures

– An SDMA: which is a new blood screening process that looks at the kidneys in particular, and can alert us to the early stages of kidney disease that standard blood testing does not

– A Heartworm Test: Bundaberg is now a Heartworm hotspot and as this disease usually has no symptoms until it is very progressed, we will be screening all patients who have blood work with us so we can detect this deadly disease as early as possible, greatly improving your pets chances of survival if they are infected. Pets who have Heartworm Disease are at risk of sudden cardiac death when under anaesthetic, so it is crucial we know their heartworm status prior to procedures.

Feline Blood Screening Package:

– A T4 Test: which looks at thyroid function and can help us detect diseases such as hyperthyroidism, which can be common in cats especially as they age We recommend annual blood screening for all patients, as the best outcome for our beloved pets is for us to catch any issues as early as possible, giving your pet the best chance at a long, healthy life.

We also recommend blood screening prior to ANY anaesthetic procedure, so we can pick up any underlying issues that would increase your pets risk going under anaesthetic. This is compulsory for any pet over the age of 7 going under anaesthesia in our hospital.

Even the youngest pets who appear totally healthy may have underlying issues that could put them at risk under anaesthetic or greatly reduce their life expectancy without treatment which is why this blood screening is recommended for all pets.

Our new complete blood screening is worth over $350, but we believe it is so important for your pets to have regular blood screening, we have packaged it up for a reduced cost of $239.90.

A Comprehensive Blood Screening could save your pets life prior to an anaesthetic as well as greatly increase their life expectancy if underlying conditions are picked up and treated early on. If you have any questions about blood screening, please call our team on 4151 3550 and we will be happy to answer your queries!
