Behavioural Advice

Compassionate, expert care for pets experiencing behavioural challenges

At Sugarland Animal Hospital, we understand that behavioural issues can be just as distressing as physical health problems—for both pets and their families. That’s why we offer comprehensive Behaviour Consult Packages with our experienced behaviour veterinarian, Dr Naomi, who holds Memberships in Veterinary Behaviour.

With a calm, supportive approach and in-depth knowledge, Dr Naomi works with you to understand your pet’s behaviour, identify underlying causes, and develop a tailored plan to help your pet, and your household, find peace and confidence.

What Can Dr Naomi Help With?
Dr Naomi helps pets and their people manage a wide range of behavioural concerns, including:
Generalised anxiety
Separation anxiety
Reactivity (such as barking, lunging, or fear-based behaviours)
Phobias (especially noise or storm-related fears)
Whether your pet is struggling at home, out on walks, or during stressful events, Dr Naomi provides clear guidance, compassionate support, and effective tools to help improve quality of life for both you and your pet.

A Collaborative, Holistic Approach
Dr Naomi works collaboratively with your GP vet, qualified trainers, and you as the pet’s guardian to ensure a cohesive, team-based approach to behaviour care.

She takes a multimodal and holistic view, addressing behaviour concerns through:
Environmental management strategies to set your pet up for success
Behaviour modification plans tailored to your pet’s specific triggers and lifestyle
Medical management, where appropriate, to support lasting behavioural change

Dr Naomi also recognises that living with a pet who is anxious, reactive, or fearful can be overwhelming. She is here not only to treat the behaviour, but to support you and your family through every step of the journey.

Frequently Asked Questions About Behavioural Advice for Your Pet

  • What kinds of behaviours can we help change or improve in your pet?

Pets can form all sorts of habits and behaviours quite easily, some of these may be quite undesirable, but that doesn’t mean that they can’t be modified and improved.

It’s important to understand the cause of these behaviours. Sometimes the cause may be behavioural, genetic predispositions, or it might be due to medical reasons.

Some of the common behavioural concerns we can advise you on include:

    • Nipping and biting
    • Barking
    • Escaping
    • Aggression
    • Urination or defecation in places other than their bathrooms/outdoors
    • Separation anxiety

We can work closely with you to help understand the cause of these behaviours and help to change this behaviour in your pet.

  • How do I book behavioural advice sessions for my pet?

If you need behavioural advice for your pet in the Bundaberg region, all you need to do is give us a call on 07 4151 3500 or book an appointment online to discuss it with us.

We can discuss the behaviours and potentially assess and observe your pet to determine the causes for the behaviour. We can then work with you to guide you in how to train them out of this behaviour and to monitor their progress.
